Japan Makes History with "Truthful Reality Television" Angels in America wins NHK President's Prize British Programs Dominate 8 of 15 Categories

(Banff, Alberta, Canada, June 13, 2004)
British program-makers walked off with the lion's share of Banff's polished bronze Rockies Sunday night, but it was Japan and the United States who got the two biggest prizes -- the gold and silver of the 25th edition of the Banff Rockie Awards. The $50,000 Global Television Grand Prize for Best of the Festival went to the producers of Children -- Full of Life: Learning to Care, from NHK, Japan's public broadcaster. It was the first time in the Festival's history that a Japanese program won the Grand Prize, and the first time that the Family and Youth category winner had gone on to claim top honors.

Over 900 programs representing 40 countries and territories were entered in the world’s broadest and most prestigious international program competition. Program-makers compete for prizes in 15 program categories, as well as the $25,000 NHK President’s Prize, and the $50,000 Global Television Grand Prize for the program judged Best of the Festival. Nominees are chosen by the Festival’s selection committee, and are subsequently screened by an international jury of television professionals who decide prize-winners. The award-winners are announced at the 25th Banff Rockie Awards Show presented by CBC/Radio-Canada on Monday, June 13.

In addition to the programs nominated for the Banff Rockie Awards, 69 programs received honourable mention as hors concours (out of competition) selections. Hors concours selections are not part of the official competition, but receive special designation in the Banff program listings.
